Court 13 2018 Film Set Design Artist Residency

Court 13 is excited to announce the return of our Artist-in-Residence Program with a new focus and a new idea: our first-ever Film Set Design Artist Residency. Over a two month period in Fall 2018, two artists-in-residence will each create a constructed environment that will act not only as stand-alone installation, but also as the inspiration for new film narratives. This is an opportunity to invert the normal film-making process and have your visual imagery dictate the storyline. Successful proposals will be fully realized environments, conveying a visual story through art direction, construction, set decoration, and anything else you can imagine and execute. The sets will then serve as the inspiration and jumping off points for the 2019 Court 13 student short-film writing and directing labs. 

Court 13 believes in centering the art-making practice at the heart of filmmaking, and that non-filmmakers are also capable of conceiving and creating incredible visual-narrative spaces. This is an opportunity for art directors, production designers, architects, theatre scenic designers, art students, installation artists, and anyone who believes in the power of visual storytelling to create a wholly new built environment. 

The on-site residency is from October 29th to December 14th. Two film-set proposals will be selected by a jury of designers and artists. The finalists will then have seven weeks, a $4000 budget, and on-site help from a construction and art department crew to complete their vision. 

Upon completion in December 2018, the built sets will then be used as writing prompts and filming locations for a local short film competition directed at high school students, with production starting in Spring 2019. The collaboration will culminate with film and installation premieres at our Always for Pleasure Festival IV in May 2019.
